Is Coughing a Sign of Mesothelioma?

Posted by Michael Throneberry | Sep 09, 2022

People who have suffered asbestos exposure in the past are at a high risk of developing mesothelioma. This is a form of cancer that is quite deadly and aggressive. Although not everyone who gets exposed to asbestos ends up developing mesothelioma, it is crucial for everyone who has ever suffered asbestos exposure to be aware of the symptoms of this aggressive and fatal type of cancer. It is vital that everyone who has ever suffered asbestos exposure is aware of the symptoms of mesothelioma so they avoid being diagnosed with mesothelioma at a later stage. Treating mesothelioma when it has progressed to a late stage is usually difficult.

One symptom that could indicate something is not right is a cough. But is a cough a warning sign of mesothelioma? Read on to find out.

Is a Cough a Warning Sign of Mesothelioma?

It is important to note that there are different types of mesothelioma. The two most common ones are pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the chest, whereas peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the abdomen. If a person develops pleural mesothelioma, coughing is one of the symptoms they will likely experience. Coughing is usually not a symptom of peritoneal mesothelioma. Therefore, to answer the question, “Is a cough a warning sign of mesothelioma?” It depends. Coughing could be a warning sign of mesothelioma or not.

Other Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma

Apart from coughing, there are many other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma that people with a history of asbestos exposure need to know about. The following are other common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma;

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hoarseness
  • Pain in the side of the lower back or chest
  • Swelling in the arms or face
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on the chest

Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

As already hinted, coughing is usually not a symptom of peritoneal mesothelioma. Below are some common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma;

  • Abdominal pain
  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite

When a person with a history of asbestos exposure begins experiencing a persistent, painful cough and/or any of the other symptoms of mesothelioma, they should see their doctor right away. Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma can also indicate another disease, but one can only find out what is ailing them after seeing their doctor. However, although symptoms of mesothelioma can also indicate other illnesses, it is crucial for a person with a history of asbestos to share that piece of information with their doctor when they visit them.

What Happens if a Person Has Mesothelioma?

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for mesothelioma. However, several treatment options that can improve prognosis and the quality of life of patients are available. Treatment options for mesothelioma include;

  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapy
