Military Families Sue Over Asbestos and Other Unsafe Living Conditions at NAS Key West

Posted by Michael Throneberry | Aug 04, 2025

Close to 200 current and former occupants of military housing at Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West have filed a lawsuit alleging failure to manage and maintain the houses they live in. The plaintiffs point to persistent, intolerable conditions in their homes that they claim raise concerns about the risk of mesothelioma and other serious health problems. The suit names Balfour Beatty, the private company responsible for handling maintenance and repairs on behalf of the U.S. military.

The alleged presence of asbestos in the housing units is a primary concern in the lawsuit. While the military has implemented measures to eliminate asbestos from areas with the highest concentrations, especially locations such as Navy ships with heat-generating equipment, the plaintiffs say that their concerns about asbestos in their homes were ignored. The lawsuit alleges that Balfour Beatty failed to respond to multiple requests to inspect and manage asbestos-contaminated materials. Asbestos poses a significant risk if disturbed or when it deteriorates. When asbestos is disturbed or deteriorates, it can release fibers into the air that, when inhaled, can cause severe health conditions like mesothelioma.

The asbestos concerns are just one part of a larger problem described in the lawsuit. The military families also report the presence of high levels of toxic mold, lead-based paint, and other structural and functional defects in the homes. The lawsuit lists issues like water intrusion, malfunctioning HVAC systems, plumbing failures, and electrical problems as persistent issues that make life difficult and pose a danger.

While these conditions are inconvenient, the lawsuit clarifies that this is not just about inconvenience. The conditions described in the lawsuit paint a disturbing picture of the dangerous conditions the families have endured and the risk of asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma, as well as other health issues like asthma, brain fog, respiratory problems, migraines, and sinus infections. In addition to the physical concerns, the lawsuit highlights the psychological and emotional toll of living under such circumstances. In the lawsuit, the families describe the high levels of stress, emotional strain, and mental fatigue that have been caused by constantly worrying about their health and the safety of their homes.

Through the lawsuit, the families are seeking compensatory and punitive damages and the legal costs associated with pursuing the lawsuit.

This is not the first lawsuit to ever be filed against Balfour Beatty over concerns about asbestos in military houses, the risk of mesothelioma, and other hazardous conditions. Four years ago, the company pleaded guilty to fraud for falsifying maintenance records in military housing elsewhere in the United States to receive performance bonuses from the federal government. The recent suit alleges that similar mismanagement happened at NAS Key West. The families claim that the company lied about the condition of the homes and failed to complete critical repairs, leaving residents at risk of long-term health consequences.
