Top Six Frequently Asked Questions About Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Posted by Michael Throneberry | Feb 22, 2026

A mesothelioma diagnosis often comes with fear, confusion, and countless questions. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that forms in the mesothelium, a thin protective lining found on organs like the lungs and abdomen. This cancer is primarily caused by asbestos exposure. Many people often come to us with questions regarding mesothelioma and asbestos. As such, we have compiled the six most common questions our clients frequently ask. Read on to learn more.

  1. What Do Mesothelioma-Causing Asbestos Surfaces or Items Look Like?

Unfortunately, asbestos does not have an obvious appearance. This is the reason why it is tricky to identify. Asbestos can have a white or gray look that resembles soft, fluffy cotton in its raw state. Chrysolite, the most common type, usually appears in a string-like form, while other types can have brown or blue tones.

In buildings, asbestos may be found in insulation, textured walls, floor tiles, or roofing shingles. If a surface or item containing asbestos is damaged, it may appear white and string-like, especially along the chipped or cracked sections. These string-like fibers are microscopic, so relying on eyesight alone may not help identify a surface that has asbestos.

If you suspect asbestos in your home, never attempt to scrape the surface. Instead, call a certified asbestos professional to do the testing and handling.

  1. Is There an Asbestos Do-It-Yourself Test Kit?

While DIY asbestos test kits exist, experts strongly discourage using them. Disturbing a surface suspected to contain asbestos can release the microscopic fibers that are dangerous to anyone in that space. And yes, this includes even collecting a sample.

  1. How Much Exposure to Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma?

There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Even a brief or one-time exposure can lead to a mesothelioma diagnosis decades later. However, being repeatedly exposed to asbestos increases the risk of mesothelioma. To reduce your exposure:

Avoid bringing asbestos-contaminated clothes or work gear home

Be cautious when buying vintage or upcycled items

      Choose talc-free personal care products

Hire qualified asbestos abatement professionals for testing and removal

  1. Is There Any Cancer That Mimics Mesothelioma?

Yes. Sometimes, lung cancer that spreads to the lining of the lungs can resemble mesothelioma. This is why doctors have to run specialized lab tests, imaging, and tissue samples to confirm the diagnosis. Additionally, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is best to get a second opinion to make sure the diagnosis is correct.

  1. Can You File a Legal Claim After the Death of a Loved One Due to Mesothelioma?

Yes. Families, dependents, spouses, or estate representatives may file mesothelioma-related claims after a loved one passes away. Such claims may include:

      Wrongful-death claims

      Asbestos trust fund claims

Settlements against manufacturers or companies responsible

  1. Are Mesothelioma Settlements Taxable?

Most mesothelioma settlements related to physical injury or wrongful death are not taxed. However, if you are awarded punitive damages, these are typically subject to taxation.
